Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I Was Starting My Health Journey

are you just starting your health journey? Or maybe stuck in a bit of a rut with it?

 Here are some things that I wish I knew at the beginning of mine:

1. Take pictures! You’ll want to be able to look back on these and see how far you’ve come – I promise! Especially if you are having a day where nothing seems to be going right, quite often I put together side-by-side comparison photos for my clients when they are feeling let down just to remind them how far they’ve come and how awesome they’re doing! We tend to forget this along the way and only seem to focus on the end goal sometimes.

2. Sometimes it will be hard! You might have to compromises you may not want to make. You’ll get tired at times, but you’ll find a way to make it work! You might doubt the process, yourself and may even think about giving up but don’t! Respect yourself enough to follow through with your goals! I always tell people – we spent years creating the habits that got us to the point, it is going to take some time to create some healthy, new ones but I promise they will happen if you keep your mind open to change.

  1. There is no magic supplement or diet that lets you eat endless amounts of food and lose weight. Trust me I’ve tried both of these.. but that being said, at least you can save yourself some time, wonderment and money by not trying them and can start with something that does?

    4. Mindset is everything! The vibe that we put out to the world will also be the one that we attract. Negativity draws negativity and choosing to try and take on a situation with a different frame of mind will change your outlook on other things. Dwelling on small things creates more things to dwell on. Deciding whether you are having a “good day” or a “bad day” sets the tone for how the rest of the events will unfold. The power of your state of mind is so much greater than what people even realize! Sometimes problems are only problems because people make them that way. If you can look at the incident and say “Could things be worse?” And the answer is yes then you have the opportunity of reminding yourself of all the awesome things you have in your life and turning it into a “good day”, or at least a moderately decent one. And it’s ok to have that “bad day” from time to time but perpetually living as Eeyore with an “everything sucks” attitude not only effects you but the others around you. Keep your chin up, someday everything will make perfect sense and next month or next year that little thing that wrecked your day won’t even be a blip on the radar that we call life.

 

  1. Progress is not linear. Your weight loss goal is a behavior, not a number. Many factors contribute to the number on your scale at a specific moment in time, and not all of them are within your direct control. It can be extremely demoralizing then to set a numerical weight as your goal and not be fully equipped to achieve it. Progress comes in SO many different forms that can’t be dictated by the scale either! Progress is also measurements, how our clothes fit, positive choices and changes we’ve added to our life, changes in our mindset. Any positive change we make to our body, mind, routine are all forms of progress! And you know how you reach your goal? When you continuously show up for yourself. Patience really is a virtue and know that this is a time when it will be tested.

If you take anything from this, let it be this: this is YOUR journey! Be proud, make it a priority, and learn to love all of the ups and downs – whatever they may be and as hard as they may be. There is nothing more satisfying than crushing a goal you set forth!
